Andre Onana’s Unorthodox Penalty Shootout Antics Backfire Against Arsenal

Manchester United’s pre-season tour in the US got off to a rocky start with a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, but the real talking point came in the penalty shootout that followed. United goalkeeper Andre Onana attempted to distract Arsenal’s penalty takers with some unorthodox antics, but they ultimately backfired.

Despite the defeat, United won the penalty shootout 4-3, thanks in part to Jadon Sancho’s cool finish. However, it was Onana’s bizarre attempts to put off Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes that stole the show. The goalkeeper tried to distract Magalhaes by pointing to the left side of the goal, but the defender was not having it, shushing Onana before slotting the ball home.

The incident has been viewed nearly 400,000 times on social media, with many fans mocking Onana’s failed mind games. One United fan joked, “Andre Onana is not serious,” while an Arsenal account added, “For someone that shipped in 60+ goals last season, Andre Onana has shame and should keep his mouth shut.”

The game itself saw United striker Rasmus Hojlund open the scoring, but Arsenal responded with goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli. Hojlund and new signing Leny Yoro both suffered injuries in the first half, with manager Erik ten Hag unsure of their condition.

“We have to wait 24 hours and then we will hopefully know more,” Ten Hag said. “We were very careful, especially with Leny. It is disappointing he had to come off, but let’s be positive and see what comes out.”

Despite the defeat, United will be looking to bounce back in their next pre-season game, while Onana will be hoping to put his penalty shootout antics behind him.
