Tom Brady, widely regarded as one of the greatest NFL players ever, has revealed one significant regret from his illustrious 23-year career in the league.
During an appearance on The Pivot podcast last month, the 46-year-old, seven-time Super Bowl champion, shared that he took football too seriously compared to other quarterbacks, specifically the younger, 28-year-old Chiefs star, Patrick Mahomes.
Brady lightheartedly remarked, “When I see young players like Patrick [Mahomes] out there, running around, laughing, and having a good time, I think to myself, ‘I used to be like that. What happened?'”. He added that he wished he could have enjoyed the game more and not been so hard on himself.
Tom Brady shared a regret about his NFL career, wishing he had enjoyed it more.
The veteran QB noted the playful attitude and joy exhibited by younger players like Patrick Mahomes.
Brady intends to bring a more relaxed and playful approach to his broadcasting career, learning from his past experiences.
Despite having no intentions of returning to the game, Brady plans to carry this lesson over to his second career as a broadcaster. “You learn from it,” he explained, “and now, in the next phase of my life, I plan to enjoy it a little more.”
Fans reacted to the podcast clip on social media, with one commenting, “Brady never seemed to be enjoying himself, but that dedication is what made him so great.” Another fan joked, “Brady has never looked like he’s having fun in his entire life!” while others defended his serious approach, crediting it as a key factor in his success.
Reflecting on his early career, Brady acknowledged that he took wins for granted and that his love for football stemmed from the joy of simply throwing the ball. He also shared that as his career progressed, he found more enjoyment in practices than in games due to the high expectations and pressure he placed on himself.
During his 20 seasons with the Patriots, Brady achieved an impressive six Super Bowl Championships and 219 wins.
Brady added another Super Bowl title to his legacy in 2021 with the Buccaneers, showcasing his enduring talent and dedication to the game.
Since retiring from football, Brady has signed a lucrative 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox Sports to become their lead NFL analyst starting this fall. He is also a part-franchise owner of multiple sports teams, including the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, Birmingham City FC, and the Las Vegas Night Owls in Major League Pickleball. Additionally, he is bidding to become a part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders.
