On Friday, Discovery+ released the first trailer for the upcoming docuseries, “Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun: Bad Blood.” The two-part series delves into the highly publicized and protracted feud between the multi-Grammy-winning artist and the renowned artist manager, dubbed a “battle of the titans” by the show.
The latest season of VS delves into the controversial sale of Swift’s masters to a man she considered a “nemesis” for $300 million and their highly publicized and divisive dispute. Last month, Warner Bros. Discovery U.K. & Ireland announced that the two hour-long episodes will premiere in June, exploring the bitter dispute that came to a head in June 2019.

As a montage of video footage from that time played, various experts chimed in, offering their thoughts and perspectives on the infamous feud. One expert emphasized the high stakes involved, stating, “We’re talking about hundreds of millions of dollars and the catalog of one of the most beloved artists in the world.”
The trailer began with legal experts and journalists setting the stage and highlighting the singer-songwriter’s remarkable talent, power, and impact at just 34 years old. Swift was described as a “pop culture giant” and “the first musician to become a billionaire solely through music.”
The docuseries then recounted how Scott Borchetta, a record executive and founder of Big Machine Records, signed a deal with Scooter Braun in 2019. Borchetta had started the label in 2005 with Swift as their first signed artist. The contract included other business deals, but its fundamental aspect was the transfer of total ownership of Swift’s entire music catalog, encompassing her first six albums, to Braun.
Braun, a high-profile manager whom Swift had long regarded as a “nemesis,” was introduced as someone who discovered Justin Bieber, worked with Ariana Grande, and was notably associated with Kanye West, who infamously interrupted her 2009 VMAs speech.
When Braun’s media company, Ithaca Holdings, acquired Borchetta’s Big Machine Label Group for $300 million, he also obtained ownership of Swift’s self-titled debut album, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation.

One talking head described the situation as “a betrayal of an artist and a woman in a male-dominated world.”
In July 2019, Swift publicly denounced the business deal in a viral Tumblr post, characterizing it as her “worst-case scenario” and alleging that she had endured “incessant, manipulative bullying” from Braun for years. The following November, she mobilized her fanbase to reach out to other artists working with Braun so she could perform songs from her masters.
Less than a year and a half after acquiring her master recordings, Braun sold the rights to Shamrock Holdings for over $300 million. Swift later asserted that this transaction occurred without her knowledge and without giving her the opportunity to buy back her catalog.
In April 2021, Swift embarked on a journey to reclaim creative rights and control over her music by re-recording her albums. To date, she has completed four out of six “Taylor’s Version” releases, encompassing the first 10 years of her career while signed with Big Machine Records.
In September 2022, Braun appeared on NPR’s The Limits podcast, expressing his “regret” over how the deal was handled. He cited a non-disclosure agreement and acknowledged learning an important lesson from the fiasco.
The teaser included various clips of Swift and Braun, along with experts and sources close to them, presenting differing perspectives and arguments. One person stated, “She will stand up for what’s right,” while another added, “She called on her fans to apply pressure on Scooter.” Another expert commented, “She was in charge of an army, and she’s the general,” highlighting the contrasting opinions.
Some additional comments included, “He makes no apologies for being a businessman,” “Scooter’s side says we gave her a chance to purchase her masters back, and she just said no,” and “Being seen as the villain on the internet was pretty tough for him.”
A clip from the trailer shows Braun talking onstage about receiving ‘death threats’ and expressing his frustration with the situation
Near the end of the teaser, a clip showed Braun speaking onstage about receiving “death threats,” sharing his sentiment that “it’s got out of hand.” The experts weighed in, with one stating, “Scooter was becoming very wealthy off her work in an unfair way.”
Opposing viewpoints were presented, with comments like, “It was a business deal, it wasn’t a bullying attack against her,” “There’s a lot behind the scenes you don’t know about. The truth didn’t matter,” and “It was a battle of the titans. Goliath versus Goliath.”
The new docuseries, commissioned by Warner Bros. Discovery U.K. and Ireland, is a part of the VS series, which also examines other high-profile disputes, including the court case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and the divorce of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.
