Former Premier League star Chris Sutton has made a shocking revelation about his record-breaking transfer to Blackburn Rovers in 1994. On the latest episode of the podcast It’s All Kicking Off!, Sutton disclosed that he spent the night before his transfer at a Norwich police station.
Sutton, who was just 21 at the time, was considered one of the most promising young talents in British football. He had already made a name for himself by scoring 25 Premier League goals for Norwich in the previous season, which also saw the team pull off a historic upset by eliminating Bayern Munich from the UEFA Cup.
As a result, several top Premier League clubs were vying for his signature, but it was Blackburn, managed by Sir Kenny Dalglish, that ultimately secured his services for an English-record £5 million.
However, Sutton’s move to Blackburn was not without its drama. On the podcast, he revealed that he got arrested the night before his transfer, admitting that he “got a little bit excited.”
Despite the inauspicious start, Sutton’s time at Blackburn proved to be a successful period in his career. He formed a deadly strike partnership with Alan Shearer, and the team went on to win the Premier League title in 1995.
Sutton’s revelation on the podcast has given fans a glimpse into the more light-hearted side of his personality, and his ability to laugh at himself even in the face of adversity.
