The entertainment world, particularly the cast and crew of ABC’s beloved daytime drama General Hospital, recently united in remembrance of a cherished cast member, Johnny Wactor, whose life was tragically cut short.
Following an episode aired on June 11, viewers were presented with a heartfelt title card honoring the actor, who passed away on May 25. The tribute featured a photograph of Wactor, accompanied by the poignant words, ‘In Loving Memory Of Johnny Wactor.’
Wactor, who skillfully portrayed the character of Brando Corbin from 2020 to 2022, left an indelible mark on the show and its fans before his untimely demise at the young age of 37.
This outpouring of affection and respect from the General Hospital family is not an isolated incident. ABC released an official statement via social media, expressing their heartbreak over Wactor’s passing. They described him as “truly one of a kind” and extended their deepest sympathies to his loved ones.
Giovanni Mazza, who portrays Gio Palmieri on the show, echoed these sentiments in an interview with Us Weekly, assuring that Wactor’s memory would forever be cherished by his colleagues.
“I believe his memory will stay with all of us,” Mazza shared at the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. “Although I didn’t know him personally, I know many who did, and the entire General Hospital family grieves his loss.”
He further emphasized the determination to honor Wactor’s memory, stating, “We move forward, carrying his memory with us and doing our best to make him proud.”
Wactor’s mother, Scarlett, bravely spoke to media outlets following her son’s death, conveying the immense grief felt by the family. “It has left a huge hole in our hearts,” she shared.
The autopsy confirmed that Wactor’s death was a result of homicide, specifically a gunshot wound to the chest.
Details of the incident revealed that Wactor had been out with a colleague and, in a valiant attempt to protect her from perpetrators trying to steal a car, lost his life. Wactor’s brother, Grant, recounted to the press how his brother had just finished a bartending shift and was ensuring the safety of his female companion.
“Being from the South, we’re raised with certain values, and we would never let a woman walk to her car alone,” Grant explained. “He noticed something suspicious and asked if they were towing his truck. When he turned around, he saw what was happening and put himself between the perpetrators and his coworker. That’s when they shot him.”
Grant also shared the heart-wrenching details of his attempts to reach his brother prior to learning of the tragic news. In an interview with Extra, he recounted calling and texting his brother multiple times to no avail. He described his persistent efforts to contact the hospital and police, and the devastating moment when his worst fears were confirmed.
Wactor’s General Hospital costars took to social media to express their own heartfelt tributes, reflecting on his kindness and dedication. Sofia Mattson, whose character Sasha Gilmore was married to Brando on the show, shared, “Johnny was the absolute best. So genuine, caring, and hardworking. He had a huge heart and always made sure everyone around him felt loved and valued.”
Wactor leaves behind a lasting legacy, cherished memories, and a grieving family, including his parents and siblings.
