Singer-songwriter Chappell Roan has taken a bold stance against the “predatory behavior” she’s faced in the music industry.
In a candid Instagram statement, the 26-year-old artist expressed her frustration and exhaustion from dealing with unwanted advances and harassment. “I’ve been in too many nonconsensual physical and social interactions,” Roan wrote. “I want to be an artist for a very long time. I’ve been in too many nonconsensual physical and social interactions and I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don’t owe you anything.”
Roan emphasized that she chose a career in music out of her passion for art and self-expression, not to be subjected to harassment. “I do not accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path, nor do I deserve it,” she stressed.
The “Hot to Go” singer drew a clear distinction between her professional life and personal space. “When I’m on stage, when I’m performing, when I’m in drag, when I’m at a work event, when I’m doing press … I am at work. Any other circumstances, I am not in work mode. I am clocked out.”

Roan also addressed the blurred lines between her public persona and private life, stating that she doesn’t owe anyone a “mutual exchange of energy, time or attention” outside of her professional engagements.
She specifically called out “predatory behavior” disguised as “superfan” behavior, which has become normalized due to the way women have been treated in the past. “Please do not assume you know a lot about someone’s life, personality and boundaries because you are familiar with them or their work online,” Roan urged her followers.
The singer-songwriter concluded her message by expressing her gratitude for her genuine fans’ understanding and support. “This has nothing to do with the gratitude and love I feel for my community, for the people who respect my boundaries and for the love I feel from every person who lifts me up and has stuck with me to help the project get to where it is now.”
Roan’s message has already resonated with other musicians, including Maren Morris and Hayley Williams of Paramore, who have co-signed her statement and shared their own experiences with harassment in the industry.
