Renowned sports commentator Shannon Sharpe recently opened up about his unusual decision to avoid staying at a woman’s house for over three decades. In a candid interview, Sharpe revealed two incidents from the early 1990s that led him to adopt this unique lifestyle choice.
The first incident occurred on the night Sharpe was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1990. Returning home to Georgia late, Sharpe opted to stay at a woman’s place instead of going to his grandmother’s house, believing her to be single. However, things took an unexpected turn when he experienced sleep paralysis and overheard a loud argument between the woman and her partner.

“I can hear it getting louder and louder,” Sharpe recounted. “So, by this time, boom! The door flies off the hinges. I’m jumping up like, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ I said, ‘Oh lord, he’s got some serious intentions.'”
Fortunately, the woman’s partner was not upset with Sharpe and even congratulated him on being drafted by the Broncos. Sharpe agreed that he was in the wrong and promptly left.
The second incident, however, was far more serious. Three years later, during a Broncos bye week, Sharpe found himself in a similar situation in Georgia. As he entered the woman’s house and set down his belongings, he noticed the door handle turning. A man entered the room brandishing an AK-47, clearly upset and ready to take action.
“I said, ‘My man, is this your people?’ He said, ‘Yeah. Two years.’ I said, ‘My man, I didn’t know.’ I said, ‘You know who I am now. Man, I apologize. You saved me.’ Because if I had not been [interrupted], I wouldn’t be here telling this story,” Sharpe recalled.
These two incidents left a lasting impression on Sharpe, and he made a conscious decision to avoid such situations in the future. “I have not closed my eyes at another woman’s house in 31 years,” he stated.
Sharpe has largely kept his love life out of the spotlight and has never been married. His unique perspective and lifestyle choices have certainly added an intriguing layer to his public persona.
