Selena Gomez stars in the recently released trailer for the highly-anticipated film, Emilia Perez, with the Netflix premiere date also announced. The acclaimed actress portrays Jessi, the sexy wife of a cartel leader, in this unique trans gangster musical.
Gomez shared the exciting news on her Instagram, revealing that the film will debut on Netflix on November 13 in the US and UK. Prior to its streaming release, Emilia Perez will also have a theatrical run, starting with a French release on August 21, followed by select theaters in the fall.
The film, entirely in Spanish, is set in modern-day Mexico and stars Zoe Saldana as Rita Moro Castro, a lawyer who receives an unexpected proposition. She is tasked with helping a feared cartel boss, Juan ‘Small Hands’ Del Monte, portrayed by Karla Sofia Gascon, transition into the woman he has always dreamed of being—Emilia Perez.
Back in May, the film received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, with Gomez wiping away tears at the overwhelming response. The film is directed by Jacques Audiard and also stars Edgar Ramirez, Mark Ivanir, and Adriana Paz.
Audiard shared that Emilia Perez initially took shape as an opera libretto but later evolved into a feature-length film. He also noted that the film was predominantly shot in studios to allow for more freedom in the sung and choreographed portions.
With its unique blend of genres and an impressive cast, Emilia Perez is sure to be a must-watch when it arrives on Netflix later this year.
