Scottish Commentators’ Anguish: BBC Team Reacts to Hungary’s ‘Unbelievable’ Extra-Time Strike

Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign came to a devastating end on Sunday night as they suffered a 1-0 loss to Hungary, marking their 12th consecutive group stage exit from a major tournament.

The game, which took place in Stuttgart, was witnessed by approximately 50,000 Scots in attendance and over a million viewers back in Scotland, including a live radio broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live with commentary by Lyndon Dykes and Pat Nevin.

Dykes, who would have been part of Scotland’s squad if not for an injury, and Nevin, a former Scotland player, were both left heartbroken as Hungary scored the winning goal in the 10th minute of added time.

Scotland’s hopes were dashed as Hungary scored in the 100th minute, securing their exit from Euro 2024.

BBC 5 Live shared a clip from inside the commentary box, capturing the moment Nevin and Dykes witnessed Hungary’s last-gasp goal. As Scotland prepared to take a corner, Dykes exclaimed, “This is the chance, this is the chance we need.”

However, as Hungary won the ball back and launched a counter-attack, Dykes could only groan in disappointment while Nevin, chewing gum nervously, looked on in disbelief before slumping his head dejectedly.

Nevin summed up the sentiment by saying, “Scotland find ways, new weird ways, of going out of tournaments. And is that the 100th minute? Scotland have managed to lose a goal.”
