The Duchess of Edinburgh paid a subtle tribute to her husband, Prince Edward, while showcasing what appeared to be an impressive anniversary gift.
The Duchess, 59, and Prince Edward, 60, attended the Order of the Thistle ceremony on July 3 as the Duke of Edinburgh became a member of the esteemed order, having received the award earlier this year. (The Order of the Thistle is Scotland’s highest honor, recognizing 16 knights selected from men and women with distinguished public service or a “contribution” to public life, according to the BBC.)
The couple, married in 1999, exuded regal elegance at the event. Prince Edward donned the iconic green velvet robe, while the Duchess opted for a soft pink dress and matching hat. Her ensemble included a heartfelt tribute to her husband, as she accessorized with a pair of sparkling diamond half-moon earrings. Tatler reported that these earrings are believed to be an anniversary gift from Prince Edward for their 25th “silver” anniversary, celebrated on June 19.
In addition to the Duchess and Prince Edward, King Charles III also inducted his wife, Queen Camilla, into the order during a private ceremony held at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh. Prince William, who was appointed to the order in 2012, was also in attendance.
Prince William, 42, has been actively participating in royal engagements while his wife, Princess Kate, undergoes chemotherapy following a cancer diagnosis earlier this year. The couple is taking Princess Kate’s recovery one day at a time, and the challenging situation has brought them even closer together.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, married in April 2011, appeared more in love than ever at Trooping the Colour on June 15, marking Princess Kate’s first public appearance after her abdominal surgery in January.
“William and Kate seem like a different couple!” a source exclusively told Us Weekly about the royal couple’s newfound closeness. “They used to be more reserved, but now they can’t help but look at each other and smile.”
As Princess Kate focuses on her health, a second source revealed to Us that Prince William has stepped up remarkably in caring for their three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
“William’s been very hands-on lately, taking the lead in family activities and routines,” the source shared, adding that he enjoys reading bedtime stories and playing sports with the children. “Princess Kate loves seeing him in this role, and it’s brought them even closer.”
