Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Spill the Beans on Getting Madonna’s Approval for Deadpool & Wolverine
During a recent interview with Jess Cagle on SiriusXM, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman dished out the details on their latest superhero adventure, including the lengths they went to get Madonna’s iconic song “Like a Prayer” featured in the film.
Reynolds, Jackman, and director Shawn Levy met with the Queen of Pop in person to showcase how the song would be used in the film, and it paid off – Madonna not only gave her approval but also provided notes on where the clips should be dropped in.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman dished about how they got Madonna to approve the usage of her 1989 hit Like A Prayer in their new Deadpool & Wolverine film
Reynolds and Jackman, along with director Shawn Levy, met with the Material Girl in person in hopes of getting her to give her permission to license Like A Prayer for the film
Reynolds confessed that getting Madonna’s approval was a “big deal” and that they had to “show her how it was being used, and where, and why” to convince her to license the song.
Levy chimed in, revealing that the meeting felt like they were “meeting royalty,” and Reynolds jokingly asked if he could simply address Madonna as, well, “Madonna.”
Madonna’s input proved invaluable, with Reynolds revealing that her note on the film led to a significant change that improved the sequence.
“She gave a great note,” Reynolds said. “She watched it, and I’m not kidding, [she said], ‘You need to do this.’ And damn it, if she wasn’t like spot on.”
The film’s success is no surprise, given the franchise’s previous box office hits. Deadpool was released in 2016 and grossed $782.8 million, while its sequel, Deadpool 2 (2018), raked in $785.8 million.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to drop in theaters in the UK on July 22 and in the US on July 26.

Jackman also played Logan/Wolverine in the ensemble casts in X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).
