Jamaica has announced Steve McClaren as their new men’s head coach, marking a new chapter for the former England manager. McClaren leaves his role as assistant coach at Manchester United, where he worked alongside Erik ten Hag.
McClaren’s appointment comes as a surprise, with his exit from Old Trafford confirmed on Wednesday. The 63-year-old had returned to Manchester United two seasons ago, helping the team win the Carabao Cup in Ten Hag’s first year and finishing last season with a FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
McClaren’s experience and success made him a prime candidate for the Jamaica national team, which has been searching for a new permanent manager since Heimir Hallgrímsson’s resignation last month. Steve Bruce was also in talks for the vacancy, but McClaren has ultimately taken the reins.
