Liverpool Edges Closer to Signing Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili
Liverpool is on the verge of completing a deal for Valencia’s Georgian goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili. The 23-year-old is expected to become the Reds’ first signing under Arne Slot’s era. According to sources, the deal is close to being sealed after several rounds of negotiations.
Mamardashvili, who joined Valencia on loan in 2021 and signed a permanent contract the following year, is considering the possibility of staying on loan at Valencia this season. This move would allow him to gain more experience and playing time, as Liverpool’s number one, Alisson, is expected to remain at the club.
The Georgian goalkeeper has impressed in LaLiga, with reports suggesting that Valencia’s main shareholder, Peter Lim, was unwilling to negotiate a deal involving such a key player for the squad. Mamardashvili featured in all of Georgia’s Euro 2024 games, leaving a strong impression of his skills, notably after his side beat Portugal with a stunning display of five saves from the goalkeeper.
Liverpool remains the only club in Europe’s top five leagues yet to make a signing this transfer window. The Reds had previously targeted Martin Zubimendi, but he rejected the club and will stay at his boyhood club Real Sociedad for another year.
Despite criticism regarding the club’s pragmatic approach in considering additions to the squad, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot hit back, stating that the squad is strong and it’s not easy to find players who can help or strengthen the team. Slot emphasized that the club will move forward with the players they have, as they are in a good place.
