Manchester United have taken a significant step towards completing the transfer of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain, with the 23-year-old midfielder having finalized his medical examination ahead of a £50.7m move.

United are racing against time to register Ugarte by midday, ensuring his availability for Sunday’s highly anticipated home game against Liverpool. This is particularly crucial, given Mason Mount’s recent hamstring injury, which will keep him sidelined for a month.

The two clubs agreed on a fee on Monday night, following negotiations led by United’s Jason Wilcox and Matt Hargreaves, the club’s director of player negotiations, in Paris.

Ugarte, who has not featured in either of PSG’s opening two games of the new Ligue 1 season, has made it clear that he wants to join United. The midfielder is set to become Erik ten Hag’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window.

The Dutchman has focused on bolstering United’s defense, bringing in striker Joshua Zirkzee, center-halves Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, and full-back Noussair Mazraoui so far.

Meanwhile, United defender Rhys Bennett has joined Fleetwood on loan, while Scott McTominay will be announced as a Napoli player today, bringing an end to his 22-year association with the club.

McTominay, who enjoyed his best goal-scoring season last term with 10 goals across all competitions, will depart United after coming through the club’s youth ranks.
