Jenna Ortega Slams Hollywood’s ‘Politically Correct’ Culture, Saying It Lacks Humanity
Jenna Ortega, the 21-year-old actress known for her role in Netflix’s Wednesday, has spoken out against the “politically correct” nature of Hollywood, claiming it results in a loss of humanity and integrity.
In an interview, Ortega expressed her frustration with the entertainment industry, saying it has become “so touchy-feely” and that people are too afraid to speak their minds.
“Everybody wants to be politically correct, but I feel like, in doing that, we lose a lot of our humanity and integrity, because it lacks honesty,” she said.
Ortega explained that she wished society had a better sense of conversation, where people could express their opinions without fear of judgment. “Imagine if everyone could say what they felt and not be judged for it, and if anything, it sparked some sort of debate, not an argument,” she said.
Ortega’s comments come after her Scream 6 co-star Melissa Barrera was fired from the next installment of the horror franchise for posting in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Ortega seemed to be alluding to this incident, saying that people should be able to express their opinions without fear of repercussions.
Ortega also spoke about her experience with fame, saying that it has felt “very dissociative and alien and out-of-body” at times. She described the concept of celebrity as “absolutely ridiculous” but said she is passionate about acting.
The actress also shared her thoughts on the many fans of Wednesday, who dress up as her character and show up at her public appearances. “Who could have anticipated that someone as dark and twisted and sarcastic as Wednesday could bring out such joy?” she said.
Ortega noted that Wednesday’s intelligence, wit, and confidence are traits that many people wish they possessed themselves. “When you’re trying to create yourself and you’re taking all these bits and pieces from other people’s personalities and creating your own broken mirror…,” she paused, collecting her thoughts.
Ortega’s comments have sparked a lively debate about the role of politics in Hollywood and the importance of free speech. While some have praised her for speaking out against the industry’s “politically correct” culture, others have criticized her for being insensitive to marginalized groups.
