Jake Olson, a trailblazer as the first blind player in Division I college football, is grieving the loss of his trusted guide dog, Quebec. With a heavy heart, Olson shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, expressing the depth of their bond. “A part of my soul departed with my dearest companion,” he wrote.
Olson’s journey with sight loss began before his first birthday, and by the age of 12, he had completely lost his vision. Despite this challenge, he made sporting history in 2017 when he took to the field for the USC Trojans, snapping in two games. It was a remarkable achievement, and Quebec was by his side through it all.
In their 13-year partnership, Quebec accompanied Olson on a remarkable journey. They graduated from high school and college together, traveled across 28 states, met a US president, and experienced the thrill of playing in the Coliseum. Quebec was more than just a guide dog; he was a loyal companion who shared in Olson’s joys and sorrows. “He saw me grow from a teenager to a man,” Olson poignantly noted.
Olson’s profound connection with Quebec is underscored by the timing of their journeys. Quebec was born on November 6, 2009, and just days later, on November 12, Olson lost his sight. “I believe he saw the world for the first time as I lost my vision,” Olson reflected. It’s a testament to the unique and profound bond they shared.
As Olson navigates his grief, he finds solace in a quote that captures the enduring nature of their connection: “If you’re fortunate enough to have known a remarkable being, they never truly depart; they remain with you forever, tethered to your heart.”
Olson’s tribute to Quebec is a testament to their extraordinary partnership. “You will always hold a special place in my heart. I love you so, so much, my dear friend,” he wrote, his words reflecting the depth of his affection for his devoted guide.
The official USC Athletics Instagram account also paid tribute to Quebec, acknowledging the profound bond between Olson and his guide dog. “#FightOnForever, Quebec,” they wrote, accompanied by heart emojis.
Since his playing days, Olson has dedicated himself to helping others, establishing the Out of Sight Faith foundation, which provides technology to blind students, ensuring they have the tools to pursue their dreams.
