Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides actor Tamayo Perry has tragically passed away at the age of 49 following a shark encounter in Hawaii.
The incident occurred near Goat Island on Sunday, June 23rd, according to Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. Honolulu Ocean Safety and emergency services responded to a call around 1 p.m. local time regarding a man with multiple apparent shark bites near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.
Paramedics transported Perry to shore via jet ski, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Acting Ocean Safety Chief, Kurt Lager, described Perry as a “lifeguard loved by all” and a “professional surfer known worldwide,” offering condolences to his family and the lifeguard community.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also expressed his sorrow, calling Perry’s passing “a tragic loss” and highlighting his standing as a “highly respected” member of the community.
In addition to his role as a buccaneer in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Perry had credits as a stunt performer in Owen Wilson’s The Big Bounce, and appearances in Charlie’s Angels 2, Blue Crush, Lost, and Hawaii Five-O.
Beyond his acting pursuits, Perry was a passionate and accomplished surfer. His instructor bio from Oahu Surfing Experience highlights his surfing career and a near-fatal experience that shaped his approach to surf etiquette and safety instruction.
Perry is survived by his wife, Emilia Perry, to whom we extend our deepest sympathies.
