Last month, fans were concerned after Ryan Sutter posted cryptic messages about his wife of 20 years, The Bachelorette #1 Trista Sutter, who was reportedly “searching for something.” It has now been revealed that she was away filming for the third season of Fox’s Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.
According to reports, Trista has been competing on the reality show, which is expected to air in the fall. The 51-year-old physical therapist, known for her appearance on The Bachelorette, joked that her absence could be due to various reasons, including a “nervous breakdown, trial separation, midlife crisis, death, or divorce.” However, it turns out she was focused on her TV comeback.
The upcoming season of Special Forces will also feature The Bachelorette #6 Ali Manno. The unscripted series will follow 16 well-known individuals as they take on a challenging course inspired by a highly classified special forces training program.
In a May 25 Instagram post, Sutter (born Rehn) explained her decision to join the show: “An opportunity for perspective and personal growth presented itself, and with the support of my loved ones, I chose to prioritize myself and my well-being, knowing that my family and friends would take care of my stay-at-home mom duties and my children’s needs during this time.”

She further added, “My reserved husband, who usually values privacy over social media posts, decided to express his love for me through messages that would reach me during my journey. We view Instagram as a digital diary, and most of the time, our posts don’t attract much attention.”
Sutter also addressed the media coverage of her husband’s posts, saying, “This time, however, he couldn’t say anything right, and almost every news outlet picked up on his “cryptic/confusing/attention-seeking/dramatic” photos and captions. To me, they conveyed exactly what I needed to hear to get through some serious self-doubt and fear, and that’s all that matters.”
The reality competition show, led by former US Recon Marine Rudy Reyes, is based on the British series SAS: Who Dares Wins. Previous seasons have featured notable contestants, including Olympic speed skater Erin Jackson and Bachelor alums Nick Viall and Tyler Cameron, who successfully completed the course in New Zealand.
Cameron described Special Forces as his “favorite project” despite being the “most physically challenging” experience. He credited his time on The Bachelorette for mentally preparing him for the criticism and fan reactions that come with reality TV.
The first season of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, set in Jordan, was won by retired soccer player Carli Lloyd and The Bachelorette #15 Hannah Brown. Brown shared her experience, stating that the show put participants on a calorie deficit and sleep deprivation, making it extremely challenging for everyone, especially those with larger body types.

Fans of the Bachelor Nation are known for their passion and dedication, despite the low success rate of couples staying together after the show. Out of 20 seasons of The Bachelorette, only four couples remain together, including Desiree Hartsock and Chris Siegfried from season nine.
Similarly, out of 28 seasons of The Bachelor, only four couples are still together, including Sean and Catherine Lowe from season 17. Interestingly, Bachelor in Paradise has a higher success rate, with 10 couples still together after nine seasons.
