Bill Belichick Issues Warning About Steelers Offense, But Defends Russell Wilson
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has sounded the alarm about the Pittsburgh Steelers offense, but surprisingly, he doesn’t think quarterback Russell Wilson is the main issue.
Belichick believes Wilson is not the problem, and in fact, he prefers the 35-year-old to backup Justin Fields. According to Belichick, Fields turns the ball over more than Wilson, and Wilson is one of the best “downfield throwers” in the NFL.
Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Belichick said, “I think they have bigger problems than at the quarterback position. The offensive line had a hard time being consistent there.”
Belichick continued, “They lost the tackles … They have a rookie center, and the guards, they’ve had some issues too in the preseason games.”
Russell Wilson has not had the easiest start to his Pittsburgh Steelers career at age 35
Belichick believes Wilson is not the biggest problem in Pittsburgh despite the turbulence
Belichick added, “They need to get the running game going, they have good backs, they need to get those backs started. Russell’s good out of the pocket. But I think the problems are bigger than Russell Wilson. I think it’s really offensive line and the running game.”
Wilson is in his first season with the Steelers after two underwhelming seasons with the Denver Broncos. Fields, on the other hand, is also in his first season in Pittsburgh after three seasons as the Chicago Bears starting quarterback.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has made it clear that Wilson is the starter, despite neither quarterback impressing in the preseason thus far. Najee Harris is slated to be Pittsburgh’s starting running back, and the team brought in Arthur Smith, the former Falcons head coach, as the offensive coordinator to pair with Wilson. Belichick believes Smith is a “good fit” for the team and Wilson.
