The value of Patrick Mahomes II’s sporting legacy is evident, with his sports memorabilia fetching astronomical prices. A recent auction saw his rookie card sell for an impressive $173,000, a testament to his success in the NFL. With three Super Bowl wins, two MVP awards, and a lucrative $477 million contract under his belt, Mahomes’ popularity among collectors is undeniable.

The card in question, graded a perfect PSA 9 with an autograph score of 10, features Mahomes’ autograph and a unique twist: a game-worn patch bearing the Chiefs’ Lamar Hunt memorial emblem. This particular card is one of only ten in existence, making it an extremely rare find for collectors. Its seller, Goldin Auctions, described the Panini card as “the most iconic NFL rookie card ever produced by Panini.”

While this sale is certainly noteworthy, it pales in comparison to the record-breaking sale of a similar card in 2021. That card, the only one in its set, sold for a staggering $4.3 million. The difference in value can be attributed to the jersey patch; the recent sale featured a patch honoring late owner Lamar Hunt, while the $4.3 million card boasted the more recognizable NFL patch.

Mahomes’ journey to NFL stardom began in 2017 when he was drafted 10th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs after a stellar career at Texas Tech. He spent his rookie season on the bench, learning from starter Alex Smith. However, in 2018, Mahomes took the league by storm, leading the Chiefs to four Super Bowl appearances and aiming for a record-breaking third consecutive Super Bowl win this season.

The card, numbered 8 out of 10, is a rare find for collectors.
