Palmer Breaks Silence on Frustrating Euro 2024 Ordeal: “Why Was I Benched?”

Cole Palmer Opens Up on ‘Difficult’ Euro 2024 Campaign with England

Cole Palmer, the Chelsea star, has spoken candidly about his challenging experience with England during the Euro 2024 tournament.

Palmer, who finished last season as one of the top players in the Premier League, was a key part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros. However, he did not start in any of England’s seven games, despite making five impressive cameos as a substitute.

The 22-year-old’s tournament highlights included a successful penalty in a shootout victory over Switzerland, assisting Ollie Watkins for England’s late winner against the Netherlands in the semi-finals, and a fine goal in the defeat to champions Spain.

In an interview, Palmer described his overall tournament experience as ‘difficult’, citing his lack of playing time as the main reason.

‘You’re going into a new group, you have lads who have been there a number of years,’ Palmer explained. ‘Obviously, being a new young player, all the lads did take me in to be fair, like they did with all the young players. So it was quite easy to settle in, but obviously not playing and thinking to yourself, “Why?” and just questioning yourself.’

Despite his limited playing time, Palmer remained confident in his abilities, saying, ‘I didn’t question my ability because I knew what I had done during the season.’

Palmer recently signed a new nine-year contract with Chelsea, and he will be looking to make a strong impact in the upcoming Premier League season.
