Mikaela Shiffrin‘s fiancé, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, has been readmitted to the hospital.
In a surprising turn of events, Kilde, 31, revealed on social media that he’s facing a new challenge in his shoulder rehabilitation. “Little (big) update … not the kind of update I could have imagined even just 4 days ago,” he wrote. “But, here we are. I’ve been struggling with some increased pain in my repaired shoulder over the last couple weeks, which seemed like a normal reaction after increasing load and training more ‘normal.'”
Kilde explained that he’s developed an “angry infection that has caused some damage” to his shoulder, which is “quite a setback” in his rehab. This means he’ll need to undergo 6 weeks of IV antibiotics every day through a PICC line to combat the infection.
“After those 6 weeks, we’ll see what the next steps will be,” he wrote. Kilde noted that the update is “quite a bummer, but we keep fighting.” He expressed gratitude for the support of his loved ones and the medical team at Steadman, saying, “I am so lucky and grateful to be surrounded by incredible, caring, brilliant people both at home and away.”
Alongside the message, Kilde shared several hospital photos, including one of him and Shiffrin, 29, lying in bed together.
Shiffrin took to social media to share her own inspiring message. “Out of the many lessons I learn from you, one of the greatest is — Smile,” she wrote. “Even through the tough times. I love you @akilde. Forward .”
In January, Kilde suffered a fall during a World Cup downhill race in Wengen, Switzerland, which left him with a dislocated shoulder and a calf laceration. He was taken to a hospital in Bern for treatment.
Months after the accident, Kilde proposed to Shiffrin, and they shared the news via a joint social media post in April, complete with photos of them smiling and a close-up of her ring. They captioned the upload, “🤗🫶💍👫🤭.”
