The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to make their debut on ‘Hard Knocks’ in 2024, but one of their star players, Cam Heyward, has expressed his displeasure with the decision.
In an unprecedented move, the NFL Films and HBO documentary series will focus on the entire AFC North division during the upcoming season. Heyward, a defensive lineman, shared his initial reaction to the news on his Not Just Football podcast, stating that he “hated it” and didn’t want to participate.
His main concern lies in the potential disruption to the team’s locker room dynamics. Heyward explains that while there are inside jokes and banter among teammates, they come from a place of love and care. He fears that being on ‘Hard Knocks’ might alter the perception and misinterpret the nature of these interactions.

‘Hard Knocks’, which debuted in 2001, has provided fans with unparalleled access to NFL teams’ practices, offseason activities, and personnel decisions. However, in recent years, the league has faced challenges finding volunteers to participate.
Previously, teams could decline the show if they had made the playoffs in the last two seasons or had been featured on ‘Hard Knocks’ in the last 10 years. Under new rules, this period has been reduced to eight years, and teams with first-year head coaches are also allowed to opt-out, according to the Sports Business Journal.
The show has evolved beyond its traditional training camp and preseason focus, with an in-season version featuring the Colts in 2021. This year, the Steelers, Bengals, Ravens, and Browns will be part of this in-season edition. Additionally, an offseason version debuted recently, showcasing the Giants and their NFL Draft process.
The traditional training camp-focused version of ‘Hard Knocks’ will return this summer, featuring the Bears.
