Mason Greenwood Set to Make England Return After Two-Year Absence
After a hiatus of over two years, Mason Greenwood might finally don his cleats on English soil this summer. The 22-year-old striker recently joined Marseille from Manchester United, marking a fresh start in his career.
Greenwood’s last appearance for the Red Devils dates back to January 2022, just before he was arrested on charges of assault and attempted rape, which were later dropped. Although he didn’t play at all during the 2022-23 campaign, he spent the following season on loan at Getafe, where he impressed with 10 goals and six assists, earning him the title of Getafe’s Player of the Season.
Striker Mason Greenwood signed for French club Marseille from Manchester United this week
Marseille shelled out £27million plus £3.2m in potential add-ons to secure Greenwood’s services. The striker could make his unofficial debut for Marseille as early as Sunday when they face Nimes in their first pre-season friendly of the summer.
The French club will then take on SC Toulon on Wednesday, followed by a match against Pau next Saturday. On August 3, Marseille will travel to Bradford’s Valley Parade to play against Sunderland in their penultimate summer friendly. If Greenwood features in that match, it will be his first outing in a public game in England in two years, six months, and 12 days.
Greenwood has not been involved in a game at an English stadium since January 22 in 2022
Bradford holds a special significance for Greenwood, as it’s his hometown. Born and raised in the Yorkshire city, Greenwood moved to Manchester after joining United’s academy.
But he could feature when Marseille play Sunderland at Bradford’s Valley Parade on August 3
Despite facing opposition from a significant section of Marseille’s fanbase and the city’s mayor Benoit Payan, the club completed the signing of Greenwood.
