Son Heung-min’s father, Son Woong-jung, a renowned football coach, has been indicted on charges of physically and verbally abusing young players at his football training center in South Korea.
According to reports, prosecutors have demanded that Son Woong-jung and two other coaches at his Son Academy pay an undisclosed fine and complete a training program designed to prevent child abuse.
One of the accused coaches is Son Heung-min’s brother, Heung-yun, who is three years older than the Tottenham forward.
Son Woong-jung, 62, is a well-known figure in South Korean football, having played professionally for teams including Sangmu FC, Hyundai Horang-i, and Ilhwa Chunma as a forward. He was also selected to represent South Korea’s B team in 1987.

The accusations against Son Woong-jung and the other coaches at his academy include physically and verbally abusing young players, with one incident allegedly involving the use of a corner flag to hit a student who came last in a race.
Son Woong-jung has acknowledged the incident and apologized, but denied that the treatment of players amounted to physical abuse.
The player’s parents reported the incident to the police, claiming that Son Woong-jung had struck their son on the thigh with the flag, resulting in a two-week injury.
The police forwarded the matter to prosecutors, who subsequently indicted Son Woong-jung and the other coaches.

Son Woong-jung has stated that he will cooperate fully with the authorities and has acknowledged that his coaching methods may have failed to uphold standards relating to player welfare.
The Son Football Academy, which was opened in 2021, has a clubhouse, classroom, and around six pitches, including a full-sized pitch.
The facility was built at a cost of under £11 million and is located approximately 80km northeast of Seoul.
Son Heung-min, who has established himself as a global star, has scored 164 goals across 410 appearances for Tottenham and became the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot during the 2021-22 season.
