Julian Nagelsmann’s Secret Contract Terms: Massive Bonus Payouts for International Success but a Quick Exit Option with a ‘Discreet Clause’

Germany’s contract details with Julian Nagelsmann have been unveiled, with the manager poised to earn over £300,000 if the team wins Euro 2024, hosted by Germany. Nagelsmann, 36, signed a contract with the German national team in September 2023, aiming to win his first international trophy on home soil.

Given Germany’s disappointing group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup, their most recent major tournament appearance, the German FA (DFB) is determined to prevent another fiasco. According to German outlet Bild, Nagelsmann’s contract includes a “ripcord clause” to address this concern.

The DFB can dismiss Nagelsmann immediately, disregard any extension discussions, and dismiss him without severance pay if he fails to advance Germany beyond the group stage. Hansi Flick, who was fired after Germany’s poor performance in Qatar, reportedly cost the DFB a substantial sum due to the length of his contract, a situation the association wanted to avoid with Nagelsmann.

Another aspect of the “ripcord clause” is that only assistant coach Sandro Wagner, 36, would remain with the German setup after Nagelsmann’s departure. Nagelsmann, who earns £5 million per year with Germany, also has several success clauses in his contract, including a €400,000 (£337,000) bonus for winning the tournament, which the players would also receive.

Germany kicks off its Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland on Friday, followed by matches against Hungary and Switzerland in the group stage. Nagelsmann has selected a talented squad, blending veterans like Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller with young stars Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. Kroos, a Real Madrid superstar, aims to cap off his illustrious playing career with a trophy this summer, announcing his retirement from football after the tournament.
