Former Republic of Ireland player James McClean has expressed his support for Spain ahead of the Euro 2024 final against England.
McClean has been an outspoken critic of England during the tournament, branding them as “very arrogant” during his punditry work for RTE Sport.
The 35-year-old’s comments came after England’s underwhelming performances in the group stage, where they struggled to impress.
“The English hype and media around the team is always over the top,” McClean said. “For a country that has won one World Cup and never won the Euros, they are very expectant and arrogant about their chances.”

England, however, have since found their form and battled their way to the final in Berlin. McClean, undeterred, took to Instagram to show his support for Spain, donning one of their national team shirts.
“All set… now we hope and pray,” McClean wrote, accompanied by a Spanish flag and a smiling face emoji.
The shirt worn by McClean is from Euro 2012, where Spain defeated the Republic of Ireland 4-0 in the group stage. McClean entered the match as a substitute in the final 15 minutes.
McClean’s criticism of England has been particularly directed at Declan Rice, whom he branded as “overrated.” McClean played alongside Rice at the international level before Rice switched his allegiance to England in 2019.
“I think Declan Rice is overrated. He’s a very good footballer, but the English media’s praise is excessive,” McClean stated. “For me, he’s not world-class. World-class players get into any team in the world, and I don’t think he does that.”
McLean’s shirt is a reminder of Spain’s dominant win over the Republic of Ireland in 2012.
McClean doubled down on his criticism after England’s group stage draw with Denmark, stating that he expects more from a £100 million player than just sideways and backward passes.
As England prepare for the Euro 2024 final, McClean’s support for Spain adds an interesting dynamic to the buildup, showcasing the ongoing rivalry between the nations.
