Jennifer Lopez has taken the inevitable step of filing for divorce from Ben Affleck, with some surprising twists, including the symbolic timing of her decision.
J Lo submitted the legal documents on Tuesday in L.A. County Superior Court, representing herself without the assistance of an attorney.
The date of separation is listed as April 26, 2024. The couple exchanged vows in a Las Vegas ceremony on July 16, 2022. Notably, today, August 20, marks the 2nd anniversary of their more traditional wedding celebration in Georgia, making the filing date hardly coincidental.
The real shocker, however, lies in the fact that J Lo’s documents do not mention a prenuptial agreement, and sources close to the matter confirm that no such agreement exists.
This means that all earnings and profits accumulated during their nearly 2-year marriage are considered community property.
For instance, since they tied the knot, Ben has starred in “Air” and “Hypnotic”, and produced “The Instigators”. He also recently wrapped up filming “The Accountant 2”.
As for J Lo, during their marriage, she worked on “Shotgun Wedding”, “The Mother”, ‘This Is Me … Now’, and “Atlas”.
What’s surprising is that this is J Lo’s fourth marriage and Ben’s second, making a prenup seem like an obvious step. Apparently, they thought their marriage would last forever, but it didn’t work out that way.
According to the documents, Jennifer has waived spousal support and is requesting the judge to deny Ben such support as well.
Since they did not have children together, there are no custody issues to contend with.
Now for the final big twist – you would think that everything had been settled financially before she filed, but our sources say that’s not the case.
They put their marital home in Beverly Hills up for sale, Ben bought his own house in Brentwood, and she’s currently looking for a new house as well.
As reported, they have been trying to negotiate a settlement for months, and our sources say those talks are ongoing, but have become increasingly acrimonious – to the point where they’re not even speaking to each other at times.
So, why did J Lo decide to file while they’re still battling over money? Sometimes, PR concerns are involved when it comes to who files first, even though it doesn’t legally matter in a no-fault state.
