Illness Forces John Stones to Sit Out England Training Ahead of Euro 2024 Opener Against Serbia as Stern-faced Teammates Buckle Down to Business

England’s preparations for their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia have hit a snag, with key defender John Stones set to miss training due to an illness.

The Three Lions began their training in Germany on Tuesday, settling into their base at the Weimarer Land Spa and Golf Resort near Blankenhain.

Gareth Southgate received a boost with the participation of Luke Shaw and Stones, the latter having picked up a knock in the final warm-up friendly. However, Stones’ illness will keep him out of Wednesday’s session.

The 30-year-old Manchester City star is the most important center-back for England, especially after long-time partner Harry Maguire was left out due to injury. Stones’ absence is a concern for Southgate, who already has limited options in central defense.

Manchester City’s John Stones, England’s key defender, will miss training due to illness.

Stones had an injury-plagued season with City, starting only 12 Premier League games. Despite this, he remains indispensable to the national team.

With the crucial match at the Veltins-Arena just four days away, England’s stars looked focused and serious during Wednesday’s training session. Luke Shaw, recovering from an injury, kicked a ball for the first time in five months, raising hopes for his availability against Denmark next week.

Shaw didn’t complete Tuesday’s session and remained on the sidelines towards the end. Nonetheless, his progress is encouraging, and he was part of the group on Wednesday. Kieran Trippier is expected to fill in at left-back in Shaw’s absence.

Meanwhile, veteran Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton joined the squad in a quasi-coaching role. The 38-year-old, capped three times by England, brings experience to the group.

Heaton was part of England’s Euro 2016 squad but didn’t feature in their shock exit to Iceland. His presence will be valuable as the Three Lions aim to navigate a tricky group featuring Serbia, Denmark, and France.
