Sandra Bernhard has opened up about her former close friendship with Madonna, admitting that it’s “sad” that they couldn’t maintain their bond.

The two became inseparable in the 1980s, with Bernhard even appearing alongside Madonna on Late Night with David Letterman in 1988, where they famously wore matching outfits and flirted with each other.

Their friendship eventually fizzled out, with rumors circulating about the reason behind their falling out.

Now, Bernhard has reflected on her “perfect time” with Madonna, saying that she would be “fine” running into her again now.

“But I mean, I don’t know what it would be, you know? I mean, and I hate getting nostalgic and caught up in, you know, that time, because it was such like the perfect time,” she said, looking back on her life and career in the late 1980s.

“So there are times when I’m like – it really makes me sad that we couldn’t maintain our friendship,” she added, cryptically saying: “I mean, I could have.”

Fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, a close friend of Bernhard’s, has previously shared his theory that a love triangle was behind the demise of their friendship.

Mizrahi alleged that Bernhard had been dating Ingrid Casares, with whom Madonna then had an affair.

Bernhard has also hinted that the media scrutiny involved in their friendship was a strain on her, saying: “I didn’t really like that level of visibility and having to work it constantly.”

“What I tried to impart in our friendship is: ‘I’m really your friend, I’m not just somebody that’s passing through,'” she added.

She reflected: “And I guess for a while we had a real friendship, but it’s hard for somebody like her. She doesn’t really want somebody around who reflects too much of who she is. Therefore, her relationships just don’t last.”
