Stephen A. Smith has shared his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick’s potential return to the NFL as a coach, rather than a player, at the age of 36. Kaepernick has been offered a coaching job by the Los Angeles Chargers, and Smith believes he should take it.
Kaepernick has been wanting to return to football as a player, but Smith thinks that ship has sailed. “If he wants to coach, cool. No problem. I think Colin Kaepernick would be a good coach,” Smith said. However, he added that Kaepernick’s chances of returning to the NFL as a player are slim to none.
Smith emphasized that Kaepernick’s NFL career was derailed by his stance on social justice issues, particularly his decision to take a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice. “He was blackballed,” Smith said. “He was ostracized. We know this. Nobody’s running from that.”
Despite his support for Kaepernick as a coach, Smith believes that any talk of him returning to the NFL as a player needs to stop. “That ship should have sailed. Not only has it sailed, it should have sailed,” Smith said.
Kaepernick’s last known NFL workout was with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, and at 36 years old, it’s unlikely that he would be signed as a player. Add in his long layoff and past controversies, and it seems highly unlikely that he will ever play in the NFL again.

Smith’s comments come as Kaepernick considers the coaching offer from the Chargers. While it’s unclear what the future holds for Kaepernick, one thing is certain – his return to the NFL as a player is highly unlikely.
