Malik Nabers, the Giants’ rookie wide receiver, appears to have dodged a serious issue after sustaining an ankle injury over the weekend. According to head coach Brian Daboll, Nabers is “sore today” but will be taken on a day-to-day basis.
Daboll explained that Nabers twisted his ankle during a non-contact drill on Sunday, adding that the injury is not believed to be serious. “I think he’s okay, he’s just a little sore today,” he said.
Nabers, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been impressing during his first training camp with the Giants. Despite the injury, Daboll remains hopeful that Nabers will be able to participate in practices soon. “If they deem him ready to go and he feels good, we’ll continue to work him and get work,” he said.
Plan is for Daniel Jones to play, Drew Lock getting better
Jones, who has not appeared in a game since tearing his ACL last November, is expected to make his return this weekend. Daboll said, “If things go the way they need to go these next couple practices, plan on playing him.”
The head coach explained that the needs of the individual will guide the decision of playing in preseason rather than a general rule about playing time in exhibition games. “I think every season, every year is different, every quarterback is different – it’s really all the players, too – what we think we need,” he said.
Daboll also provided an update on quarterback Drew Lock, who is recovering from an injury sustained in the preseason opener. “I think Drew is getting better, so we’ll see where he is for this game… he’s feeling better,” he said, adding that Lock could potentially play on Saturday but is a long shot.
Other injury updates
The Giants will have right tackle Evan Neal and center John Michael Schmitz working on individual drills. While it’s unlikely they will feature on Saturday, Daboll wouldn’t rule either of them out.
Tight ends Lawrence Cager and Jack Stoll will return to practice, while defensive backs Jalen Mills, Cor’Dale Flott, Dru Phillips, Deonte Banks, and defensive end Jordon Riley will not practice.
Giants sign running back Lorenzo Lingard
The Giants announced the signing of running back Lorenzo Lingard on Monday after the undrafted rookie was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. Lingard played 52 games in college across six seasons: two with Miami, three with Florida, and last year at Akron.
In 12 games with the Zips in 2023, Lingard ran for 641 yards on 143 carries (4.5 yards per attempt) with 368 yards on 38 catches (9.7 yards) and six total touchdowns.
