Gridiron Glamour Turns Grim: Marquise Brown’s Kansas City Debut Marred by Shoulder Woes

Kansas City Chiefs’ Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown Hospitalized with Shoulder Injury in Debut

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown was rushed to the hospital on Saturday night after suffering a left shoulder injury in his debut with the team.

Brown, a speedster who signed a one-year, $7 million deal with the team in the offseason, lasted just one snap against the Jaguars before exiting the game.

The 27-year-old caught an 11-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes over the middle and got hurt as he was tackled to the ground by Jaguars cornerback Montaric Brown.

Head coach Andy Reid deemed the injury to be a sternoclavicular joint dislocation after the game.

The sternoclavicular joint is located where the collarbone and sternum (breastbone) meet, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Reid also compared Brown’s injury to one that Tyreek Hill suffered against the Jaguars in 2019.

Hill, now with the Dolphins, missed four games with that ailment and Reid told reporters that Brown ‘potentially’ could miss some time as well.

The two-time defending champion Chiefs play two more preseason games before opening their regular season vs. the Ravens on September 5 in roughly three weeks.

Brown has been mostly durable in his career, though he’s missed eight games over the last two seasons combined.

If he can’t suit up versus Baltimore, Mahomes will likely look towards Rashee Rice and rookie Xavier Worthy to complement his favorite target Travis Kelce.

Rice, who could be suspended after being involved in a high-speed car crash this offseason, was massive down the stretch for Kansas City last season as he ended the regular season with 938 yards and caught 26 balls in the postseason.

Worthy failed to make an impact in his preseason debut, as he didn’t catch a pass, but the Chiefs used the No. 28 overall pick in this year’s draft on him and they’ll have high expectations for the former University of Texas standout.
