With the NFL roster deadline approaching, teams are scrambling to finalize their lineups. The New England Patriots, in particular, have some significant gaps to fill, especially on the offensive line. Fortunately, they have a substantial amount of salary cap space, allowing them to pursue top free agents.
The Patriots’ needs are primarily focused on the left tackle position, which remains a weak spot despite efforts to address it in the draft and free agency. Additionally, the team could benefit from a veteran tight end, particularly if Hunter Henry is not fully healthy by Week 1.
With a whopping $51 million in cap space, the Patriots have the freedom to explore various options. Here’s a breakdown of the best available free agents at each position:
Quarterback
The Patriots are all set at quarterback, with four players on their roster, including Jacoby Brissett and Bailey Zappe. There’s no need to bring in another QB unless Brissett gets injured.
Running back
Rhamondre Stevenson is a reliable running back, but the Patriots might want to manage his workload after he played just 11 games last season. Jerick McKinnon could be a valuable addition as a third-down receiving back, having scored 14 receiving touchdowns with the Chiefs over the last three years. Latavius Murray is another capable veteran with 11 years of experience.
Wide receivers
The Patriots don’t necessarily need more depth at wide receiver, unless a top-tier player like Brandon Aiyuk becomes available via trade. The current crop of free agents isn’t particularly impressive, so it might be better to focus on developing their young receivers.
Tight end
If Hunter Henry is healthy for Week 1, the Patriots might not need to invest in another tight end. However, if there are concerns about his status, Logan Thomas could be an interesting option. Thomas had 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns for the Commanders last season.
Offensive line
The Patriots desperately need to upgrade their left tackle position, which currently lacks depth and talent. Vederian Lowe, Chukwuma Okorafor, and rookie Caedan Wallace are the top options, but none inspire much confidence. Donovan Smith, who started 12 games for the Chiefs last season, could be a good option. The team has also inquired about Dennis Daley, who was released by the Arizona Cardinals earlier this week. Daley has played both left tackle and left guard in the pros and started 15 of 17 games at left tackle for the Titans during the 2022 season.
