Joe Gomez Opts Out of Liverpool’s Trip to Ipswich Amid Transfer Speculation
Defender Joe Gomez has decided not to travel with Liverpool to Ipswich for their season opener, as he weighs up his options amidst interest from multiple Premier League clubs.
At 27, Gomez is seeking regular first-team football, which has been a challenge with the likes of Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate vying for spots in the Liverpool lineup. A potential £45million move to Newcastle United fell through last month as part of negotiations surrounding the deal for Anthony Gordon.
Aston Villa, Fulham, Chelsea, and foreign clubs are also reportedly interested in the England international.
Liverpool is not forcing Gomez out, and would be willing to re-integrate him into the side if a move doesn’t materialize. His versatility is a valuable asset for both club and country.
Joe Gomez has not travelled with the Liverpool squad today as he is considering his options
Former Liverpool player Peter Crouch described Gomez as a “great squad player” in an interview. Joe Cole added: “I really feel for Joe Gomez because when he emerged, before he had two major knee operations, he was the answer to England’s centre-half problems. He could play right-back, left-back.”
Cole continued: “He’s won his trophies. I think he’ll want to go somewhere and try and establish himself. I think seeing Marc Guehi and (Ezri) Konsa getting into the England squad probably made him think: ‘I need to play regularly this year.'”
Gomez signed for Liverpool from Charlton in 2015 for a fee of £3.5million and has since made 248 appearances, winning top club honors including the Champions League and the Premier League. He has also broken into the England set-up, making 15 outings but never establishing himself as a regular.
