American Athletes Shine at the 2024 Paris Olympics
The 2024 Paris Olympics are underway, and Team USA is already making a splash. The summer games kicked off on July 26 with an impressive opening ceremony that took place along the River Seine, featuring performances by world-renowned artists like Celine Dion and Lady Gaga.
Basketball star LeBron James and tennis champion Coco Gauff led the way as flagbearers for Team USA during the opening ceremony. Gauff, 20, shared her emotional response to being chosen for the honor, saying she was ” speechless” and felt “worthy” of the recognition.
“I didn’t want to cry in front of my teammates,” she added. “When Chris [Eubanks] told me, I was holding it in, but when I called my mom, I started crying because I think it’s even more special that so many incredible people — even now I get emotional thinking about it — but so many incredible people just think that I am worthy of this. It means a lot, truly.”
Team USA has already secured its first few medals, with Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon taking home silver in synchronized diving. Cyclist Chloe Dygert won the bronze medal for the Individual Women’s Time Trial in road cycling. Meanwhile, swimmer Katie Ledecky surprised fans when she lost the gold in the Women’s 400-meter Freestyle but still walked away with the bronze medal.
Team USA has won over 100 medals at every Olympic Games since 2004 and is now looking to exceed its winnings from the Tokyo Olympics, where it took home a total of 113 medals: 39 gold, 41 silver, and 33 bronze.
