Franchise Savior Falls Flat: QB’s Underwhelming Debut Sparks Concern

The Dallas Cowboys have had the luxury of not worrying about a quarterback competition during the preseason, unlike several other NFL teams. Dak Prescott, their starting quarterback, is set to play the entire 2024 season, and the team has been using the preseason to evaluate their backup options in case Prescott gets injured.

Trey Lance, who was acquired by the Cowboys, has seen significant playing time during the preseason games, including a recent matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Although he racked up 323 passing yards, his performance was marred by five interceptions and only one touchdown.

Despite initial expectations that Lance would thrive in Dallas, his performance has been underwhelming. Carrington Harrison, a sports analyst, made a bold statement, saying that Lance is “one of the biggest draft busts we’ve ever seen.”

Lance was drafted third overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, with high hopes that he would become their franchise quarterback. However, his time with the 49ers was marked by injuries and underperformance, ultimately paving the way for Brock Purdy to take over as the starter.

Now, with Lance having had time to adjust to a new system, it appears that he may not have what it takes to succeed in the NFL. His preseason performance has raised concerns about his ability to lead a team, and some are starting to question whether he was worth the high draft pick.
