Former England Defender Believes Loss to Iceland Is a ‘Wake-Up Call’ for England to Get Their ‘Wits’ and ‘Act’ Together to Secure Euro 2024 Glory

Ledley King believes England’s recent loss to Iceland serves as a timely reminder for the team to stay vigilant, but he remains confident in their ability to succeed at the upcoming European Championships.

Wembley and England fans were stunned by Iceland’s victory, with Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson’s first-half strike sealing the deal. This unexpected warm-up match result dampened spirits just before the team’s departure for Euro 2024.

King, a veteran of two major international tournaments, shared his thoughts with Mail Sport. He suggested that the loss could be a blessing in disguise, keeping the team alert and serving as a wake-up call. While acknowledging the disappointment, he expressed his belief in the squad’s strength and their chances of excelling in the tournament.

England's loss to Iceland shocked fans but King remains optimistic

Ledley King believes England’s loss is a ‘wake-up call’ but remains optimistic.

King, a former Tottenham captain, spoke to Mail Sport at Paddy Power’s penalty shootout event, where five lucky winners and their friends secured tickets to Euro 2024.

Reflecting on his own experience at Euro 2004, King acknowledged the challenges ahead for the current England squad. However, he maintained that the recent loss does not diminish their chances of winning the tournament in Germany.

“I still believe we have the strongest squad and even the strongest 11 of any team,” he asserted. “While there are many factors that come into play when winning a tournament, such as luck and avoiding injuries, I truly believe we are one of the favorites to lift the trophy in Germany.”

The former England international, Ledley King, spoke to Mail Sport at the event.

Echoing King’s sentiments, former England striker James Beattie also expressed his confidence in the team. When asked about his prediction for the Euros, Beattie replied emphatically, “England.” He added, “As any England fan would want, I live in hope that they will bring home the trophy, even though it won’t be easy.”

As England gears up for their Euro 2024 campaign, the team will look to put the Iceland loss behind them and focus on the challenges ahead. With a strong squad and the support of their fans, they remain one of the favorites to lift the coveted trophy.
