Richard Simmons’ Cause of Death Revealed: Accidental Due to Complications from Falls and Heart Disease
One month after the passing of fitness guru Richard Simmons at the age of 76, his cause of death has been revealed. According to the LA Coroner’s office, Simmons’ death was accidental, resulting from complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. This news was shared with Simmons’ brother, Lenny Simmons, who received a call from the Coroner’s office.
A spokesperson for the Simmons family released a statement saying, “The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss. … The world has truly lost an angel.”
As previously reported, the Medical Examiner’s Office in Los Angeles had deferred Simmons’ cause of death while an investigation and additional testing were conducted. At the time, police noted that there was “no foul play involved” in Richard’s death.
Richard Simmons passed away in his Los Angeles home just one day after his 76th birthday. According to reports, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call from Richard’s housekeeper, and he was pronounced dead at the scene after officers arrived at his home.
Simmons had shared a birthday message with his fans via Facebook the day before his passing, expressing gratitude for the well-wishes and sharing memories of his childhood birthdays. In the post, he recalled how his mother would buy birthday cakes from different bakeries and how he and his siblings would make their own birthday cards in school.
Richard Simmons was a beloved figure in the fitness world, known for his iconic “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” aerobics workouts and his Slimmons fitness studio, which operated until its closure in 2016. He will be deeply missed by his fans and the fitness community.

Before his passing, Simmons had been open about his health struggles, including a skin cancer diagnosis in March. He had also shared a concerning message about dying, which he later clarified was meant to encourage his fans to appreciate every day of their lives.
