The whirlwind success of Twisters has taken the box office by storm, raking in an impressive $80.5 million in its debut weekend.
The action-packed adventure, starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, premiered in over 4,100 theaters across the US, according to industry reports.
The film’s earnings have exceeded expectations, surpassing predictions by a whopping $30 million, making it the biggest opening for a live-action film this summer.
“We had high hopes for it, and it certainly exceeded those,” Jim Orr, head of distribution for Universal Studios, told ABC News. “We’re also seeing strong performances between coasts, which is great to see.”

The film has already opened in several international markets, accumulating a global total of $574.4 million, far surpassing its $155 million budget.
While critics gave the film a lukewarm 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were drawn to the high-stakes adventure focused on a team of storm chasers.
Despite not featuring any returning characters from the 1996 classic Twister, starring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton, the box office earnings suggest that audiences still have a soft spot for the original film.
However, Twisters’ reign at the top of the box office may be short-lived, as the highly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine is set to debut next Friday, expected to rake in around $160 million.
The animated films, Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2, continued to perform well at the box office.
Despicable Me 4, starring the voices of Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig, dropped to second place after two weeks at the top, earning $23.8 million.
Inside Out 2 remained at number three, with receipts worth $12.8 million.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die was in seventh place its seventh week in theaters with a take of $2.67 million. Global earnings for the latest film in the popular franchise currently total $388 million.
MaXXXine continued to lure fans to theaters. The bloody fright flick starring Mia Got as a murderous Hollywood starlet made $819,242 for the weekend and eighth place.
The Bikeriders pulled into ninth place with and some $700,000 and rounding out the top ten with $685,000 was Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1.
