Former Premier League striker Saido Berahino has made a surprising move to India, joining the second-tier side Rajasthan United on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old player, who was once regarded as one of the most promising talents in England, has not played for an English team since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in 2021. Berahino’s signing was announced on social media, with his new team branding him as “a striker with Premier League pedigree.”
Berahino has had a tumultuous career, moving from West Bromwich to Stoke City in the Championship, and then to Zulte Waregem in Belgium. He spent three years in Belgium before moving to Cyprus to play for AEL Limassol.
Despite his struggles to regain his early form, Berahino’s experience in top-flight football, including over 100 appearances in the Premier League, is expected to bring a new level of quality and professionalism to Rajasthan United. The club’s chairman said: “We are excited to welcome Saido Berahino to Rajasthan United FC. His experience in top-flight football brings a new level of quality and professionalism to our team.”
Berahino’s move to India comes after a difficult few years, during which he struggled to find consistency and was even charged with drink-driving, resulting in Stoke City canceling his contract. Since then, he has expressed his desire to return to England but has found himself playing in Belgium, Cyprus, and now India.
The player has also switched his international allegiance from England to Burundi, the country of his birth, and has featured for the Burundi national team.
Despite playing in the second tier of Indian football, Berahino’s move is seen as a statement of ambition by Rajasthan United, who are looking to compete at the highest level. The club’s chairman believes that Berahino’s presence will not only strengthen the squad but also inspire young players and fans across the country.
