The backlash to a certain NFL player’s recent commencement speech continues, with prominent sports journalist
A number of individuals have voiced their disagreement with the kicker’s address at a college in Kansas, which touched on various topics, including politics, the current US administration, and gender roles.
It is the latter part of the speech that has drawn the most criticism, as the kicker suggested that women have been misled about their role in society, including their place in the workplace.
Beadle, a seasoned sports journalist, took exception to these remarks on the ‘Over the Top’ podcast, expressing her disagreement with the kicker’s perspective.
Longtime sports journalist Michelle Beadle disagreed with the kicker’s speech
“As a woman, I think his comments were completely unfounded,” said Beadle, who has worked in sports journalism for over two decades. “When people use religion as a cover for hateful and bigoted ideas, I tend to tune out.”
Beadle went on to point out that there were women in the audience who were clearly uncomfortable with the message, and that the kicker’s remarks undermined the hard work and achievements of women everywhere. “I think it’s important to use my freedom of speech to call out those comments and say, ‘you can do better.'”
The kicker’s teammate, a well-known quarterback, has also weighed in on the controversy, acknowledging that while he knows the kicker as a person of good character, he doesn’t agree with everything that was said. “We’re not always going to see eye to eye,” the quarterback stated, “but I know he’s trying to lead in a positive direction.”
