Tragedy struck the music world on Friday when Grammy-winning DJ Fatman Scoop collapsed on stage and passed away at the age of 53.

According to his public relations firm, the artist, whose real name is Isaac Freeman III, consumed an energy drink containing stimulant compounds before his performance at Town Center Park in Hamden, Connecticut.

Just hours before his sudden passing, Fatman Scoop celebrated the release of a new single with musician Dyce Payso, titled “Let It Go.”

In a heartfelt tribute, the artist’s family described him as “not just a world-class performer – he was a father, brother, uncle, and a friend.” They added, “He was the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength, and courage.”

Born in New York City in 1971, Freeman made a name for himself through collaborations with mega-stars including Missy Elliot and Mariah Carey in the early 2000s. He was known for his deep, roaring vocal presence and was dubbed “the undisputed voice of the club” by his family.

In recent years, Fatman Scoop ventured into podcasting and reality TV, including appearing on Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother: UK vs USA in 2015.

The artist’s exact cause of death is not clear, but it came after he suffered a medical emergency on stage on Friday. Footage from the audience captured the moment the adored rapper collapsed, which came seconds after he roused the crowd, shouting “Let’s make some noise!”

Tributes have poured in for the artist, with UK’s Reminisce Festival sharing that his “absence will be profoundly felt by everyone.” Missy Elliot also paid tribute, sending her prayers to his family and recalling his contributions to the music industry.

Other artists, including Lil’ John and Timbaland, have also shared heartfelt tributes, remembering their time together as rising hip-hop artists.

Freeman’s touring agency MN2S added in a statement, “Scoop was a beloved figure in the music world, whose work was loved by countless fans across the globe. His iconic voice, infectious energy, and great personality made an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will live on through his timeless music.”
