Jhon Duran Scores Winner for Aston Villa, Apologizes to Fans for Transfer Speculation
Jhon Duran made a stunning apology to Aston Villa fans by scoring the winner in their Premier League opener against West Ham United, the club he came close to joining in the summer transfer window.
The Colombian international fired home from Jacob Ramsey’s cutback in the 79th minute, securing a 2-1 win for the Villans in London. Immediately after scoring, Duran held his hands aloft towards the travelling Villa faithful, as if to say sorry for his earlier transfer speculation.
Duran’s goal was a sweet redemption for the 20-year-old striker, who had sought a move away from Villa Park due to limited playing time behind Ollie Watkins. West Ham were heavily interested in Duran, and he even made a Hammers gesture with his arms during an Instagram live video, sparking an internal investigation at Villa.
However, Villa manager Unai Emery revealed that Duran had since reiterated his commitment to the club, and the young striker has been working to rebuild trust with the team and fans.
“He was telling us he thought his best option was to leave so he could play more for another club and fulfil his potential. I can understand it,” Emery said in a press conference. “He is young and he has a big potential to exploit. He will need time and he will need to be patient.”
Emery added that the team had spoken to Duran about his mistakes and that he had accepted his responsibility, committing to the club once again.
