Crowd Connoisseur Guy Mowbray Talks Tactics and Team England as Football Fans Ready Themselves for the Upcoming Euro 2024 Finale

In a candid interview, veteran BBC commentator Guy Mowbray reflects on his journey and the upcoming Euro 2024 final, where he will narrate the action for millions of fans across the country. Mowbray, who took over from John Motson as the BBC’s lead commentator in 2010, has commentated on nearly 1,400 matches in his illustrious 20-year career with the network.

Mowbray recalls his conversation with England’s official account, where he rationalized the team’s underwhelming performance in their tournament-opening win against Serbia, stating, “Teams that win tournaments tend to grow into tournaments.” This line has since been featured in a promotional video charting the Three Lions’ journey to the final.

The commentator also highlights the evolution of English football under Gareth Southgate, noting that traditional powerhouses like Italy and Germany have consistently performed well in tournaments, and even underdogs like Greece and Portugal have had their moments. Mowbray acknowledges the initial criticism directed at Southgate but points to his impressive numbers as proof of his success.

He describes the pressure and responsibility of being the BBC’s main commentator for England games, sharing his pre-game rituals and the support he receives from co-commentator Alan Shearer. Mowbray also reveals a friendly rivalry with ITV’s Sam Matterface, who will also be commentating on the final, and the importance of being able to offload onto each other during the tournament.

Mowbray, a York native who left university to pursue his dream of becoming a commentator, sees his role as a fan as well as a narrator. He uses binoculars to read the flags around the ground and appreciates the unity that Southgate has forged both on and off the pitch. Mowbray reflects on past tournaments where England fell short and expresses his gratitude for being able to witness the team’s current success.

As he prepares for the final, Mowbray acknowledges the pressure but remains focused on the task at hand. He doesn’t have a prepared script for if England wins, preferring to let the moment guide his commentary. Mowbray concludes by expressing his desire for an England victory, stating that it would be the “best thing ever.”

FAVOURITE MOMENT OF THE EURO 2024?

Mowbray highlights Jude Bellingham and Ollie Watkins’ goals for England as standout moments, as well as Arda Guler’s strike for Turkey against Georgia. He describes the noise inside the stadium during the Turkish anthem as unforgettable and expresses his admiration for the young player’s achievement.
