The Atlanta Falcons entered the 2024 NFL offseason with a sense of urgency, determined to revamp their roster after a disappointing 2023 campaign. The team’s struggles in the post-Matt Ryan era were evident, particularly at the quarterback position, where Desmond Ridder failed to impress.
Luckily, the Falcons possessed a top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and sufficient cap space to make significant moves in free agency. This combination of assets put them in a prime position to address their quarterback woes.
In a bold move, the Falcons signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal, despite his recent Achilles injury. This signing was a calculated risk, but one that could pay dividends, as Cousins represents a substantial upgrade over Ridder, who was subsequently traded to the Arizona Cardinals.
Additionally, the team selected Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the draft, a decision that sparked controversy but provided much-needed depth at the quarterback position.
In a recent preseason game, Penix was noticeably absent, prompting Kay Adams to query new head coach Raheem Morris about the decision.
“We have a different approach, and our approach works for us,” Morris explained.

Morris may have chosen to err on the side of caution, given Cousins’ recent injury history and the potential risks associated with playing Penix in a preseason game. With Cousins firmly established as the starter, the risk of injury to the rookie quarterback may have been deemed unnecessary.
The Falcons have transformed into a team to watch ahead of the 2024 season, with the potential to field a high-powered offense or, conversely, succumb to the pitfalls of injury.
