Scotland manager Steve Clarke is optimistic about his team’s prospects in their upcoming Euro 2024 opener against Germany, despite their recent lackluster performances and a string of injuries.
Clarke believes the competitive edge will return as they face the hosts in Munich, and he is confident that his players will be “full-on 100 percent” in their desire to avoid defeat.
Scotland’s warm-up matches have been underwhelming, with a narrow 2-0 win over Gibraltar followed by a 2-2 draw with Finland. This extends their poor run of form to just one win in their last nine matches.

Clarke acknowledged that injuries have been a concern, particularly the situation with Lyndon Dykes, which he believes may have affected the players’ mindset during the warm-up games.
However, he is confident that now that the team is in the competition, they will be fully focused and determined to succeed.
Clarke also praised Lawrence Shankland, who scored during the Finland game, and Anthony Ralston, who delivered a solid performance at right wing-back.
Additionally, skipper Andy Robertson had a memorable night, providing assists for both Scotland goals and becoming the country’s most-capped captain with 49 appearances.

Craig Gordon’s rash challenge on Galvez gave the Finns the opportunity to level the score from the penalty spot
Clarke praised Robertson’s leadership and performance, stating that he is a “proper leader” who has grown into the role of captain.
Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon reflected on his emotional return to the Scotland squad after recovering from a horrific double leg break in December 2022. Gordon, who came on as a substitute against Finland, conceded two goals but remained optimistic about his future with the national team.
In an Instagram post, the 41-year-old Hearts stopper shared the four goals he set for himself during his recovery, including playing for Hearts again and making the Scotland squad for the Euros. While disappointed about not being included in the final squad, Gordon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play at Hampden once more and set a record as Scotland’s oldest player.
