Charli XCX has addressed fans who pit her against Taylor Swift, making it clear that she will not tolerate such behavior.
In an Instagram Story posted on Sunday, the singer shared a message requesting fans to refrain from chanting “Taylor [Swift] is dead” at her concerts. This comes after a similar incident occurred at her recent performance in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
Charli, 31, recently released her sixth album, Brat, which includes the song “Sympathy is a Knife.” Fans have speculated that the song may be about Swift, as Charli is engaged to George Daniel, the drummer of The 1975 and a bandmate of Swift’s ex, Matty Healy. The lyrics “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / Fingers crossed behind my back / I hope they break up quick” have fueled these speculations.
Charli XCX and Swift have a history, with Charli opening for Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018 and even joining her onstage to perform “Shake It Off.” However, in 2019, Charli made comments about performing on the tour, stating that it felt like she was “getting up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds.” This led to criticism from Swift’s fans, known as Swifties.
Meanwhile, Swift’s Eras Tour recently concluded three consecutive nights at London‘s Wembley Stadium, with the final concert featuring a special appearance by her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. Swift’s London shows have attracted a star-studded audience, including Paul McCartney, Nicola Coughlan, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, among others.
