Patriots Training Camp Stock Watch: Maye and Brissett Trending in Opposite Directions
FOXBORO – The Patriots are gearing up for their Sunday night preseason game against the Washington Commanders, and coach Jerod Mayo has outlined a “hybrid” practice schedule for the week. This means the team will balance game-week preparations with ongoing evaluations of players as Mayo and Eliot Wolf finalize their initial 53-man active roster.
The quarterback position remains a key area of focus, with no starter decision made yet. The coaching staff will likely announce their choice by Monday night or Tuesday. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the latest stock watch, where we assess the performance of Patriots players during training camp.
Stock Up
Drake Maye, Quarterback
The rookie quarterback continues to impress, displaying decisiveness and accuracy in his throws. Maye saw limited reps with starting center David Andrews on Wednesday, but his play was rock-solid, completing six competitive passes and having two more hit the hands of his intended targets before falling incomplete.
Cadedan Wallace, Offensive Tackle
Vederian Lowe’s injury has created an opportunity for Wallace, who has filled in admirably. He held his own against Anfernee Jennings in a one-on-one rep and made quick work of rookie edge rusher Jotham Russell. If Lowe misses time, Wallace appears to be the first choice to fill in.
Joey Slye, Kicker
Slye seems to be pulling ahead in the kicker competition, making all four of his kicks on Wednesday, from 35, 42, 49, and 51 yards away. His performance has been consistent, and he may have effectively ended the competition.
Stock Down
Jacoby Brissett, Quarterback
The veteran quarterback struggled on Wednesday, underthrowing his first pass in 11-on-11 work against the scout-team defense, which was picked off easily by rookie reserve corner Marcellas Dial. Brissett’s last competitive throw was broken up (and almost intercepted) by safety A.J. Thomas. He finished the practice 3-for-6 with a pick and a sack.
Vederian Lowe, Offensive Tackle
Lowe’s injury could lead to a shuffling of the offensive line, potentially moving Mike Onwenu to right tackle, Chukwuma Okorafor to left tackle, and Layden Robinson into the starting lineup at right guard. Robinson has impressed lately, with Mayo praising his consistent performance.
Chad Ryland, Kicker
Ryland’s performance on Wednesday was inconsistent, making his 35-yard attempt but missing his next three. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Ryland trails Slye in competitive kicks over the summer, making 36 of his 47 attempts compared to Slye’s 40 of 48.
