Blues Cut Ties with Underperforming Star, Ending £100,000-a-Week Deal a Year Ahead of Schedule

Chelsea Agrees to Release Malang Sarr on a Free Transfer

Chelsea has reportedly agreed to terminate French defender Malang Sarr’s £100,000-a-week contract 12 months early, allowing him to leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

Sarr, 25, signed a five-year deal with Chelsea when he arrived from Nice in August 2020. His contract was set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, but the club has decided to let him go early.

According to reports, Sarr is expected to return to Ligue 1, with Lens being his likely destination. L’Equipe recently claimed that he was close to signing for the French club.

Sarr has made just 21 first-team appearances for Chelsea, including eight in the Premier League. All of those appearances came during the 2021-22 campaign. He spent the 2020-21 season on loan at Porto and his most recent match action came for Monaco in the 2022-23 season during another loan move.

After not being included in Chelsea’s first-team squad by Mauricio Pochettino last summer, Sarr spent the entire season training with the club’s U21 side. He wanted to join Le Havre in January but a proposed loan deal fell through.

Le Havre director Mathieu Bodmer had criticized Chelsea’s treatment of Sarr, claiming that the club had gone back on their agreement to let him join the French club on loan in January. However, sources close to Chelsea have refuted Le Havre’s version of events.
